I recently had the experience to try the BREATHE EASY SALT ROOM at the OASIS DAY SPA at 1 Park Avenue off 33rd Street. I met with Ellen Patrick one of the owners behind this brilliant idea. I loved meeting her and hearing her story — she had such a beautiful mindset and was so lovely. Everything she spoke about made sense and she is a true healer – helping bringing this therapy to us – especially New Yorkers who are so busy and dealing with pollution and stress – this is a haven for relaxation and personal care.

A bit more on Ellen Patrick that I found – https://peacelovenutrition.wordpress.com/2015/10/05/5-questions-with-breathe-easys-ellen-patrick/

She took us through how it came to be – they have two locations in New York City and two in Westchester.  Dry salt therapy is a natural, holistic way for adults and children to detoxify their lungs and skin to promote better breathing, sounder sleep and overall wellness and can help to improve the symptoms of allergies, asthma, snoring, sleep apnea and so much more. Breathe Easy’s luxurious Himalayan salt rooms and beds are as beautiful as they are therapeutic. There is a children’s room in the one in Westchester – which is incredible if you think about how it can help children with asthma – they have reading events where the children can relax and receive the benefits while enjoying their time. They thought of everything.

It makes sense that sitting in a salt room and breathing in the salt can help you “breathe easy”.  Beyond that there is so much more that this beautiful environment does for your mind – it helps calm and relax you.

The room is all built with Himalayan Salt – the floor has Himalayan Salt that feels so good as you rub your feet against it – it almost feels like you are on a beach.  I know  a bit about the power of Himalayan Salt because I bought a lamp to set off the ions that are given off from my computer so I have one near my desk — http://www.naturallivingideas.com/himalayan-pink-salt-lamp-benefits/

salt room 6Salt therapy is an effective way to naturally treat all kinds of health conditions, from skin problems to upper and lower respiratory conditions. It is a non-invasive, drug-free, chemical-free, all natural solution. Salt therapy can help relieve the symptoms of many respiratory ailments, including but not limited to:

  • asthma
  • allergies to industrial and household pollutants
  • colds and influenza
  • smoker’s cough (including secondary smoke)
  • wheezing
  • sinusitis
  • chronic bronchitis
cystic fibrosis
  • breathlessness, chest tightness
  • pneumonia after acute stage
bronchitic disease
coughs (particularly at night or after exercise)
cough with viscous sputum discharging with difficulties
  • dry, paroxysmal cough with distant rates
  • dry rales (mostly with low tone) changing its localization during auscultation
  • mucus plugs
rhinitis and respiratory allergies
  • respiratory infections
  • tonsillitis
  • reduce snoring

The reduction of inflammation helps your body heal naturally, without side effects and long term reliance on medication.

How it works

Take a seat. Micron-sized particles of natural salt are emitted from halogenation, which reduces inflammation and detoxifies the lungs and sinuses. These smaller particles embed deep into the lungs and once there, absorb bacteria, fight infection and help with mucus, which would otherwise block the airways. The walls are covered with Himalayan salt, emitting naturally occurring negative ions that reduce stress and fatigue to promote better well-being.

salt room 4History

caves_145880747Salt has been used therapeutically for nearly all of human history. The high-salinity Dead Sea was among the first health resorts in the world, a favorite of King David. Records of the excellent respiratory health of salt miners goes back to the Roman Empire, and salt therapy traces it’s roots to Dr. Feliks Boczkowski, a physician at a Polish salt mine whose successor set up the first salt therapy spa. People with asthma, allergies, emphysema and other respiratory problems began heading to the salt mines, and speleotherapy (salt cave therapy) was born.

I was in the room for a little over a half hour – when I left I did feel like I was breathing more better, my mind was very clear and I was relaxed.

If you think about  it – this is genius and makes so much sense – these are very popular in Eastern Europe — so we are so lucky that Ellen Patrick and her husband are sharing this with us – some thoughts on the use of Salt in other ways … http://www.saltworks.us/salt_info/salt-uses-and-tips.asp
